Indonesia`s Vice President calls on public not to worry about flight safety
Wednesday, January 03, 2007
Vice President M Jusuf Kalla has called on the public not to worry about flight safety standards saying he was sure airline companies were not treating the safety of human lives lightly.

Firstly, don`t worry (about flight safety standards) as the ones who are responsible for safety are the pilot and crew of the aircraft, the vice president said.

The vice president made the remark in reply to a question whether Monday`s Adam Air plane crash was due to a deterioration in flight safety standards because of tight competition among airline companies.

Secondly, airline companies will not deal llghtly with safety standards. No airline company will risk its passengers` lives, he said.

On the criteria of airworthiness and seaworthiness, the VP said the Transportation Ministry had its own regulations and criteria.

He was however concerned that recent air accidents had involved new aircraft.

About weather conditions, he said every airline company would be very careful about them while international airlines were also subject to certain regulations and standards in relation with weather conditions.

Poll
How do you expect luxury travel to perform in times of economic downturn?.

Providers of luxury travel products are going to witness shorter stays by their customers and an increase in seasonality.

People are going to become more value conscious and will opt for those luxury offers that represent a convincing value-for-money proposition. Providers of overpriced services are those to feel the pinch.

Both people paying for their personal trips and firms paying for their top executives' business trips will cut back on travel expenses, thus affecting all luxury travel providers.

It is going to be business as usual. Those people opting for high-end travel products are not going to be affected by the looming crisis.
